My Path to Becoming a KidLit Author

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Being an author wasn’t presented as a possible profession when I was a kid. However, I have always enjoyed writing throughout my life. I pursued a degree in science and gained experience as a scientific writer. My journey as a children’s author began later in life.

What began as a form of distraction—telling stories during long car rides–eventually turned into one of the most rewarding journeys of my life.

When my daughter was young, I made up a story about her and a stuffed animal to refocus her mind during long car rides and then through long bouts of insomnia. She wanted to hear the story over and over. One day her preschool teacher suggested I publish the story to share with other children. And a seed was planted.

A couple years later, I offered to give a visiting author a tour of the island where I live in exchange for advice on how to become an author. I immediately joined the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. And the seed sprouted.

What is your writing goal?

I write for children to build bridges, broaden horizons, and develop empathy. I write with the hope that children will grow up curious and open to new ideas.

Near-term goals include finding the “write-fit” agent, developing my writing community, and honing my craft.

Long-term goals include getting my work published and eventually helping other authors attain their dreams. And of course, I would love to become an award-winning author!
